Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What’s a makerspace?
A makerspace is a collaborative workspace where people can come together to create, learn, and share using various tools and materials. It's a place for hands-on learning, design, and fabrication, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and a maker mindset.
Q. How does it work?
A. Members pay $40 per month ($60 for family plans) for 24/7 access to the makerspace and to the local maker community.
Q: What are other benefits of membership?
A: All Tuesday talks and workshops are free for members (up to $80/month value).
Q: Do you have paid staff?
A: No. We are an entirely volunteer organization. We ask that every member be a volunteer. This means a willingness to share your experiences and expertise, help clean up and troubleshoot problems. Most have full time jobs, so it is important to be respectful of their time.
Q: Is parking available?
A: Yes. We have space for 9 cars outside our entrance, behind the building. These spaces are shared with Rose Pilates and it is important that we do not block in their clients or otherwise impede their business. Parking is only for members that are currently within the makerspace.
Q. What equipment do you have?
A. See a list here. If you have an interest not listed above, we’re open to adding it to our repertoire, space and money permitting.
Q: Are there hours the location is open to the public, so I can see what it’s all about?
A: The second Thursday of every month we have an open house where everyone is welcome to come and learn more about the makerspace and meet some members.
Also, there are people at the makerspace almost every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:30 - 8:30 pm who would be happy to show you around, however, we cannot guarantee that you’ll get as much attention on non-open house nights. On Tuesdays we have talks and workshops and Thursdays are devoted to various projects or games.
Q: How do consumables work?
A: Frequently used items, ranging from filament, batteries, USB drives, electronic components, hardware and a large number of craft supplies are available for members to use as part of their membership. More expensive items like wood for laser cutting, specific kits, beverages, etc are available for purchase at the space. We do ask that members provide their own consumables for bigger projects.
Q: Are children allowed?
A: Yes! We do require that a parent or guardian accompany and supervise anyone under 18 while at the makerspace. We have quite a few active families and making things together is super rewarding.
Q: Do you do events for kids?
A: Yes, by request. We have run kids workshops about Arduinos, circuitry, spectroscopy, etc.
Q: Do you offer any programs for children that lack family support?
A: Yes. We have a mentorship program that pairs our volunteer members with motivated youth.
Q: How can I learn more / get other questions answered?
A: The best way to interact with our community of makers is to join our Discord group. You can find the link to it at cfmakers.org/discord. There, any remaining questions can be answered.
